Normally when one thinks of death metal, indecipherable growling and entire albums of blastbeats come to mind. DECAPITATED are challenging the stereotypes of this genre with vocals that are more similar to NAPALM DEATH and FEAR FACTORY than they are to DEICIDE and SIX FEET UNDERr. Also the musicians don’t rely on a flurry of blastbeats for the entirety of each song, but instead they are able to lock into grooves in songs like “Revelation of Existence (The Trip)”. A couple of solos are strewn about such as the lightning fast picking featured in “Day 69". Now although I said there aren’t blastbeats throughout this whole album, their presence is still felt in more than a few songs, so no need to fret, death metal purists.
Some diehards may whine about this album even though there is no evidence of the band watering down their sound. The devastation lasts for only 32 minutes, and that short time span may be too long for some people who can’t handle Decapitated’s brutal take on death metal. If you aren’t a fan of this genre at all, I suggest giving this album a listen because Decapitated may very well be the gateway band to death metal for many newcomers.
