MAKE BELIEVE
WEEZER have been making arena-ready pop rock for over a decade, and everyone can name at least a few of their songs. This album has been out since last year, but the singles are still getting pumped out, and there’s plenty to go around if they feel like putting out more. The disc is led off by two singles, “Beverly Hills” and “Perfect Situation”, two songs that I am personally sick of at this point. “This Is Such A Pity” has an equally catchy chorus and verses, and features an 80s-style synth. The best single so far, “We Are All On Drugs”, actually takes a stand against drugs, but of course that didn’t stop MTV from editing it by replacing that phrase with “We Are All In Love”. UGH.
“My Best Friend” is an up-tempo song with cheery and positive lyrics about having a swell best buddy. For someone who is so nervous and socially awkward, this definitely comes as a surprise from Rivers Cuomo. Only 2 songs later, “Freak Me Out” comes along which is either about the same person in “My Best Friend”, or a complete stranger (it’s probably that), who apparently freaks Rivers out. It’s a low-key song, which goes along perfectly with the subject matter of calming down this person that is freaking him out. “Haunt You Every Day”, possibly the best song here, has Rivers doing his best Billy Joel, in both his vocals and the piano that is played throughout the entire track. It is also the best melodic performance on the record where Rivers goes beyond his normal range to carry a longer note. This album may not convert those who don’t like Weezer to begin with, but there is quality songwriting on here that at least deserves a chance before being tossed aside.
