Hmm, how to review a disc by what is one of my favorite players and not sound negative?
Well, I’ll kick off with the positives and go from there. For starters, Timmons is in league
of his when it comes to sheer ability and overall diversity, and trust me, I’ve seen him live
and he is even better in front of an audience. His tone, note choice, use of dynamics and
influences is stunning and I’m often left with a feeling of pure joy and exhilaration when
listening to his music. So why only 3 out of 5? The honest truth is that many of the ‘songs’
on this disc feel more like improvised jams and pieced-together thoughts rather than the
complete master works of Timmons’ past efforts. Kicking off with ‘Deliverance’ which is a
standout track, the disc takes an immediate turn with ‘Helipad’, a mid-tempo track that
really never takes off from the ground. ‘Ghost Of You’ is another mid-tempo offering, that
again doesn’t have that much to offer as far as an overall ‘song’. Things get a bit better
with ‘Redemption’ (fast-temp finally) and ‘Lydia’, but the disc just falls short of being the
typical SPECTACULAR work I come to expect from Timmons. Hopefully, he will not
take as long the next time around to release a disc which sounds alot like a good time
get-together with his band, but rather, focus more on his exceptional compositional skills
which, if you own any of his previous releases, are far more impressive than what is displayed
on this disc.
