BACK FROM THE BRINK
fCJ SLEEZ consists of 4 ambitious Canadians set out to take the Rock
world by storm. Fronted by the band’s female namesake, CJ Sleez,
Back From The Brink
documents her life for the last 10 years, which she says had literally
been “on the brink.” As always I need to point out the guitar work
first. Stacy Stray (Robin Black) churns out some very muddy riffs.
There seems to be a lot of grunge influence in the guitar work, sort of
reminds me of Alice In Chains a slight bit. The guitar tone is very
good. I don’t have much to say about the rhythm section, which isn’t a
bad thing; they just didn’t blow me away.
The vocals are a little strange for me. Not that there’s anything odd
about them, just a little deep and scratchy for me. I get the effect, I
know what they’re going for. The band is trying to mix together Hole,
The Sex Pistols, and some classic female rock, like Joan Jett. And I’m
not saying this because the press materials allude to it, I sincerely
hear all of this in the music. So if this fits your tastes than you’d
probably love this album, and this band, but I have to say that it’s
not for everyone. I can say one thing though, judging by the subject
matter, and some live photos on their website (www.cjsleez.com), I’m
sure that the band puts on a cool live show and is probably worth going
out to see. They seem like an energetic bunch, so check ‘em out if you
get the chance.
