DANKO JONES gets comparisons to AC/DC by nearly every review I’ve seen, but that description is selling them short. They have a strong old school punk vibe to them, especially on “Sticky Situation” and “She’s Drugs”. They’re not afraid to be tongue-in-cheek either, such as the QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE side project, EAGLES OF DEATH METAL. The intro to “Baby Hates Me” sounds a bit like AC/DC’s “For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)”, and features one of the many big choruses that are on this album.
“The Finger” is possibly one of the most clever songs to express a “fuck you” sentiment without actually saying those two words. “First Date” has the simultaneously brilliant/corny lines: Get your quick fix/ In my car/ You got a sweet tooth and/ I’m your chocolate bar. “Invisible” features female background vocals from a soul singer, which adds some unexpected and welcome variety to their punk-charged hard rock. “Time Heals Nothing” is one of the few serious songs on here, with a huge chorus, wall of guitars, and a “Whoa oh” harmony. The album closes out with the fastest song, “Choose Me”, a song for those who see their ideal guy or gal with someone they shouldn’t be with; it may sound like sappy subject matter, but it comes across as anything but, due to the attitude and delivery of the singer and his band of misfits. There really isn’t a weak track here, and although most of the lyrics deal with women that are addicting and rarely veers from that path which has been walked on many times already, it’s not enough of a reason to knock it. Danko Jones brings a much-needed adrenaline shot to rock n’ roll.
