JAMES TAYLOR AT CHRISTMAS
I have to admit I like some Christmas music and my favorites are TRANS SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA and MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER. This one came along as a surprise from Columbia Records. Before I became a metal lover over two three decades I heard James Taylor all over the radio in the 70’s and even the 80’s. You couldn’t escape it on popular radio. Some people may have come to know him as JT as someone my age referred to him as. James has definitely come along and in his career had some hits and misses. When in doubt release a Christmas album. Face it, when shopping during the holidays you may want to hear some totally different classic interpreted by different artists. Just think of a JT song and imagine a Christmas song in a Taylor fashion. The perfect one is “Go Tell It On the Mountain”. “Winter Wonderland” and “Santa Claus” are the traditional way and he plays with Santa’s vocals a bit. “Jingle Bells” is presented in a weird jug band like track. This comes off very weird in some ways. “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” is very in its traditional way with Natalie Cole. “River” is a track written by Joni Mitchell. “The Christmas Song” is just the way it should be. “Who Comes the Night” is as sweet as can be. “Auld Lang Syne” nicely closes this very different JT interpretation of Christmas.
