The Undercover Sessions
Ill Niño recently left their long-time label, Roadrunner Records, and have signed on to Cement Shoes which has released this 5-song EP made up of 3 covers and 2 originals. The band has quickly gained prominence for the mixing of Spanish music and metal, an undertaking that only a few bands (in the States at
least) have tried before. The album opener, "Arrastra", is sung partially in English and partially in Spanish with singer Christian Machado's melodic vocals soaring above the pounding mid-tempo thunder. Next comes a cover of Faith No More's "Zombie Eaters" with Chino Moreno from the Deftones on guest vocals. It starts out with a slow, tribal feel and Chino's ethereal vocals, and then a heavy bass line transforms the song into a barnburner with Chino and Christian trading off screams and clean melodies. The other original song on here, "Reservation for Two", is slower than "Arrastra" and features a Latin-flavored passage in the bridge. The other covers are "Red Rain" by Peter Gabriel which is decent, and Nirvana's "Territorial Pissings" which Ill Nino stay largely faithful to. The only difference is that they throw in a little Latin-style acoustic guitar in the bridge. Even if you're not an Ill Nino fan, this release is easy to get into since A) it's short and B) they do a good job with the covers and sound strong on their own songs.
