Voices of Omens
RWAKE emerged from Arkansas to deliver an incredibly unique disc, entitled
Voices of Omens, through Relapse Records. It is churning, chugging, drug induced progressive metal album that I am completely addicted to.
At first listen, I didn’t like the album too much. It goes in so many directions that I was ready to dismiss it. I soon found that its different direction is definitely something to enjoy. Hitting prog elements, like Mastodon, and quickly fading into the screechy black metal vocals was something that immediately caught my attention and is best shown on “The Finality”.
That isn’t all the album has to offer, though. There are definite stoner metal attributes present in the music (think Bongzilla) and the guitar work is so thick that you will feel like you’re sinking into quicksand. Actually, I think that Relapse puts it best when describing the music, saying: “RWAKE’s thick, tar-black riffing and vicious male/female vocal attack plunge the listener head-first into the abyss.”
RWAKE is a great example of unique, acid-drenched metal. The male and female vocals keep the album interesting through all nine tracks. Listening to
Voices of Omens can only be described as an epic journey – and everyone should take this trip!
