The Nature Of Betrayal

As of yet, I’ve never been disappointed with a release from Prosthetic Records. This time I received a copy of THE FUNERAL PYRE’s album, The Nature of Betrayal. It is a black metal masterpiece that I’ve been addicted to since its arrival. If black metal isn’t your thing, fear not – it’s great for anyone. Trust me!

The record starts off with “200 Years,” which really threw me off as to the genre that this band belonged in. It started off with a very low, acoustic sound that kicked in to a kick-drum heavy black metal blessing. The album features 8 of the most over-the-top, relentless, amazing tracks that I’ve ever heard and I would recommend all of them. Some tracks are better than others, in my opinion, but that can be the case with anything you listen to these days.

If I did have to make a few recommendations, I could tell you a couple of my favorites. “In the Wake” is an incredible vocal treat. It features the standard black metal screeching vocals but there is something about the way the track is done that makes this one my favorite on the album. I also really liked “The Nature of Betrayal” and “Ending the Eternal Reign”. Like I said earlier, the entire album is incredible.

I do want to point out that this isn’t your typical black metal. The Funeral Pyre DOES value production skills. The album sounds incredibly operatic and, at times, bombastic. The sheer sonic devastation produced by The Nature of Betrayal is very reminiscent of the legendary EMPEROR. The band’s topics are much more complex than the average satanic focus of most black metal bands. One look at the lyrics sheet will cast down any negative thoughts about the type of lyrics found in black metal.

I would recommend this album to anyone who has ever thought of their self as a fan of metal. It is everything that a band can hope to accomplish – all packed into one disc. The Funeral Pyre will be a big band, just like most bands that are signed to Prosthetic, and The Nature of Betrayal will go down in history as a classic black metal album.
