Gran Poder
ORTHODOX has a new album ready for you to buy. Gran Poder is the band’s latest effort coming to you from Southern Lord and it can only be defined as EPIC. There are only 5 tracks on this release but three of them cover a span of 10+ minutes, one of which lasts for nearly 28 minutes. The music is very slow, brooding, and experimental.
The album kicks off with “Geryon’s Throne,” which is the 28 minute song mentioned above. Chugging, distorted guitars start it off and lead into some very nice drum work that set the mood well. Picture yourself in a damp, dirty, abandoned prison and you will begin to experience the feeling that Orthodox provides throughout the track.
All of the tracks are great on this album. There is somewhat of a stoner metal feel to it, but that’s a good thing. I’m very impressed with the Venom cover song (“Genocide”) and feel that the band managed to make it their own while still showing some classic Venom groove.
All in all, Orthodox did a great job with
Gran Poder. This could definitely be used as the soundtrack for serial killer trudging through a warehouse in search of his next victim.
Gran Poder is a phenomenal release and I recommend picking it up!
