Dead Again

One of the most notorious figures in doom metal has returned! TYPE O NEGATIVE released Dead Again through SPV recently and the album could quite possibly be the best album of the band’s long and storied career. Pete Steele is out of the jail/psychiatric ward and back with a vengeance. The album is perfect in every way and a must have for all fans of good music.

The first single, “Profits of Doom,” is featured on the album twice, a radio edit and the near 11 minute original version. Both are incredible, but the radio edit is much quicker in pace and doesn’t feature the slow, churning solos from the original. While the single is a great listen, my favorite track is “These Three Things” which contains lyrics that condemn abortion. Other tracks that I’ve found myself playing a lot are “An Ode to Locksmiths” and “Hail and Farewell to Britain”.

The album features only 2 songs that don’t have some type of Christian undertones, which comes from Steele’s rediscovering his Catholic faith – according to several interviews with the frontman leading up to the album’s release. “Profits of Doom” is, in fact, a song about the Christian Armageddon that would be caused by an April 13, 2029 Apophis asteroid collision with Earth. The album artwork is a depiction of Rasputin and features an autopsy report that followed his stabbing death. When the booklet is unfolded, it becomes a cross with Rasputin’s head sitting atop.

Type O Negative is definitely one of the best artists in metal music today. The band has persevered through battles with drugs, the law, and each other and still managed to create a masterpiece with Dead Again. This one will go down as the best Type O album of all time!
