Maybe
Maybe you’ll want to buy this album. Or
maybe you’ll just want to download the one good song on here.
Maybe I get off on being a jackass. Either way Bascom Hill make some milque-toast, non-threatening, WB-drama-worthy soft rock. The band is made up of five members plus six other guys brought on to add some additional noise, and you’d think this number would make for some nice jamming, but it winds up only bringing slow-to-mid-tempo songs built mostly around acoustic guitar. If you’re not going to wow us with some astounding musicianship, then there better be some catchy tunes. The problem is there’s only one. “Day After Day” is an upbeat, catchy song where the singer carries the melody with passion in the chorus and bridge, which is sorely lacking everywhere else. The drummer also loads up on fills towards the end of the song; a nice flourish on an album that is suffocatingly predictable.
There is not much to sink your teeth into. The rest of the songs are interchangeable. “Mr. Taylor’s Class” reminds me of Five for Fighting’s latest single “World” with it’s refrain “Hey, what do you think about the world today?”, although this album came out long before that giant radio band’s release and doesn’t have nearly as good of a hook. There is a bonus track; just vocals and acoustic guitar and not much soul to it. This is like The Fray without a piano (still boring), John Mayer without the goofy charm, and likely to win over middle-aged housewives across the nation.
