Because I’m Awesome
If you’re jonesing for a fix of some girl-power pop rock, and The Donnas have left you pining, then the new release from
The Dollyrots is for you. This thing is packed to the brim with sugary sweet hooks that go down easy, courtesy of singer/bassist Kelly Ogden and the two dudes who round the band out. It’s nearly impossible to hate on, no matter how tongue-in-cheek and bratty it sounds. “Because I’m Awesome” and “My Best Friend’s Hot” are the one-two punch that open the album and they’ve got it all; singable choruses, loud backing vocals, and a “Ra Ra” cheerleader chant. “Brand New Key” shows them taking vocals to squeaky new heights in the chorus and some La La La’s to finish it out.
“Hysteria” plays out like a modern-day “I Touch Myself”, only it rocks. “A Desperate S.O.S.” has clever lyrics that are delivered in a “We Didn’t Start the Fire”-style, such as this line “I’ll stay inside if it’s code yellow.” Global warming, Bush, and other current issues are also spewed out quickly, but it’s all done with a wink; not hollow preaching. There are a few weak spots (“Watch Me Go”, “This Crush”), but “17" more than makes up for it. If you think I’m lying, download that song now and try not to sing along to it. I’m sure some critics would liken this band to Avril Lavigne, but she’s annoying and a Canuck (not to mention, more watered-down). If you want fun, you got it.
