LIVE IN SAN FRANSISCO

Hey look, someone who knows how to play more than three chords on a guitar!

JOE SATRIANI was one of the guys I grew up playing guitar with. No, not literally, although I did get to meet him once in Boston. What I mean is this: In a time when minimalists are running rampant all over the rock guitar scene, Joe Satriani is a guy who learned the instrument inside and out, and has developed a distinctly unique tone and style. Within the first ten seconds of a song, you know it's Joe playing...and THAT is an accomplishment.

This double-live disc, which was the result of a television/live video event that snowballed into a mutimedia extravaganza, is a retrospective of Joe's entire career, and spans all of his eleven past releases.

However, since Satch's music is mostly instrumental, listening to Joe shred, playing a milion notes per song, can get a little tedious. That's why many of Joe's fans are technicians, and guitar players. Thankfully, Satriani is an excellent songwriter, and many of his songs have memorable hooks, which will appear to a much broader audience than just a bunch of guitar players.

Joining Joe live are Stu Hamm on bass, whose playing is always enough to make your eyes pop out of your head, and Jeff Campitelli on drums, who plays like a friggin' octopus.

If you're a Satriani fan from day one, or if you've only known him for a few albums, this live disc should really be part of your collection, because it's just that; Live. No overdubs, just a group of superb musicians, doing what they do best, and so few others these days are able to do.
