The Heroin Diaries

OK, here it is... this is ALL you need to know about The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack: This is the most well-written collection of songs I have heard in years. This is a disc you can listen to from top to bottom, and not have a single moment where you want to hit that all-too-familiar 'next track' button. Bold statement, huh? It's true.

You MÖTLEY CRÜE fans probably know all about The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star, Nikki Sixx's memoirof the year his life spiraled out of control from heroin addiction. The SIXX AM disc is full of songs inspired by that period; Emotional, intelligent, and brutally honest. Each song on the album represents a chapter in Sixx's book of the same name.

Anyone who has dealt with addiction will identify with the feelings expressed in The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack. Feelings of shame, isolation, insecurity, and extreme sadness permeate every note of every song. This disc had to be cathartic for Nikki Sixx to write, and those types of songs are usually the best ones - songs that drain you emotionally during the creation process.

Now, the downside of this disc is that if you're a Crue fan looking for the second coming of a nearly 30 year-old band, you're going to be disappointed. While some of the songs are similar to what you might hear on a new Motley record, this is Nikki Sixx's time to shine. It's his head, and his guts...spilled out for all to see in musical form.

Sixx picked a great band to complete the ensemble. James Michael has a voice that is as angelic as it is fierce and DJ Ashba adds just the right amount of thunder to the back-end. I only wish the band would tour clubs with this lineup (I asked Nikki a few weeks ago when he was a guest on the O&A show; he said they didn't have any plans on touring... that's not a name drop either. I genuinely would love to see the band live).

I'll say it again in case you skimmed over that first paragraph: The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack is the most well-written collection of songs you'll listen to this year. OK, so I re-phrased slightly. You get the point.
