Untitled

I will be honest, I really wasn’t a fan of Korn’s last album.  In fact, I was unable to get all the way through it, so when I heard they were coming out with a new studio album, I was very skeptical.  This was a band that I had loved since junior high, and it sucked to see them lose a major member of the group, leading them to have to re-create their sound.

Their new album, Untitled is a very pleasant surprise.  As soon as their first song after the intro played, my doubts started to fade away.  While the band may not be as raw and heavy as in the past, now it seems like they have found their new sound and they still keep that edge and darkness that they’re known for.  On Untitled, you still get that industrial vibe, but the sound is a lot heavier and intense.  The guitar riffs are there and Jonathan still has a kick ass voice when it comes to singing.  He has never lost the range, and his voice can go from hauntingly soothing at one moment to crushingly loud the next.

Some of my favorite songs off of Untitled are “Starting Over,” “Bitch, We Got a Problem,” “Hold On,” “Kiss” and “Hushabye.”  Out of the entire album, there was only one song that I found myself not liking, and that was “Love and Luxury.”  The song was a little too upbeat for my liking and felt a little out of place with the rest of the album, but I’m happy to say that was the only weak track out of the 13, and that ain’t bad at all.

Untitled by Korn is a success in my eyes.  They seem to be more at home with their new sound and I think they have found a great balance between the heavy and the melodic.  If you weren’t a fan of their last album, do yourself a favor and don’t allow that to stand in your way when it comes to checking out “Untitled.”  I almost did, and I can honestly say I’m glad that I took the trip and gave it a chance.
