As Daylight Dies

Killswitch Engage is an excellent band when it comes to being heavy and melodic at the same time.  Their songs have different musical layers to them that gives each song life without becoming tiring or predictable.  As Daylight Dies has all of these elements, and it’s a damn good album because of that.

What I admire most about the band is that these guys aren’t afraid to start out with all guns blazing and then slow it down for a little bit in the middle of the song.  It’s a tricky act to pull, considering you’re always going to get people who complain that the song isn’t heavy enough.  From what I can gather from this album alone is that these guys aren’t about being as heavy as you can possibly be.  They like to experiment and find ways to make songs that’ll hook you in while still being a great kick to the face every now and then.  The lead singer can scream and yell with the best of them, and he surprisingly has an awesome range when it comes to actual singing.  That can be a rare thing these days, especially with metal bands.  As Daylight Dies is also packed with excellent guitar riffs that can be both crushing and then eerily calm.

Here’s some good news, too.  As Daylight Dies is another one of those albums where you can blast at full volume without worrying about it hitting a drag of a song that takes you out of the moment.  While there are certainly standouts on the album, the truth is that it sounds best when played all the way through and in order.  The star of the album for me is “My Curse,” which is heavy and soothing at the same time.  The riffs and double bass on the drums while he screams, “This is my curse!” always gets stuck in my head.  Other standouts are “Daylight Dies,” “Unbroken,” “Break the Silence” and “Reject Yourself.”  The Special Edition of As Daylight Dies contains 4 bonus songs and a DVD with 3 music videos and behind the scenes footage.

Looking for some complexity and layers with your metal?  As Daylight Dies might be the perfect thing for you.  It’s heavy, it’s addicting... it just fucking rocks.  What else is there to say?  Check these guys out if you haven’t done so already.
