This summer spawned a plethora of sequels and blockbuster pictures, but the true clear cut film of the summer has to be
Superbad. The film which finds its way to DVD this week was truly the breakout comedy of the summer. The film was produced by
Judd Apatow who wrote the hits
The 40-Year-Old Virgin
and
Knocked Up
and was written by the star of those films
Seth Rogen along with his longtime collaborator Evan Goldberg. The script was written by them back in their high school days and they have kept it with them as their Hollywood success has grown. This success was what led to getting the film made last year.
The film follows a day in the life of two high school seniors Seth and Evan, meticulously played by the then 23 year old Jonah Hill and
Arrested Development
star Michael Cera. The guys get invited to a party at Jules’ (Emma Stone) house, the girl Seth has had a crush on for a while. They figure if they play their cards right, they can get girlfriends for the summer so they can head off to college more experienced and better at sex for the college girls. Seth volunteers to pick up the alcohol for Emma’s party because their friend Fogell is getting a fake ID and they are going to use him to buy the alcohol. Evan has been infatuated with Becca (Martha MacIsaac) who will also be at the party. Becca likes him back and he plans to hook up with her at the party. When Fogell returns with the fake ID, the character McLovin is born (played by newcomer Christopher Mintz-Plasse who steals the film). The guys meet up at the liquor store and as McLovin is buying the alcohol, he gets punched in the face and the store gets robbed. In comes Officer Slater (Bill Hader) and Office Michaels (Seth Rogen) and they proceed to offer McLovin a ride to the party. As Sean and Evan are watching the cops talk to Mclovin, Seth gets hit by a car and has the bright idea to use the guy who hit him to get the alcohol they feel they won’t get now that the cops have McLovin. They end up at a house party where Evan is forced to sing, Seth dances with the host’s girlfriend who has her period and bleeds on his leg and eventually he ends up stealing beer by putting it into two detergent containers. Meanwhile, McLovin is in the back of the cop car with getting drunk with them and helping them answer police calls around town. Their paths cross again when the cops stop Seth and Evan in the street, but the three boys run off and eventually escape to the party they are late for. They deliver the alcohol and some really funny awkward teen hook-up moments ensue. I won’t give them all away here because some things are better seen than read. An interesting fact is that the supposed hook up of McLovin with Nicola (Aviva) had to be directed extra carefully as Mintz-Plasse was 17 at the time and couldn’t have a girl grinding on top of him because of his age. His portrayal of the nerd having sex for the first time is amazing.
The double disk DVD is loaded with special features including a hilarious gag reel with some flubs including Seth Rogen falling as he is getting out of the cop car. It also has two versions of the table reads: an early version where Seth Rogen reads the role of Seth and a later version which the actual cast on film running through it. There is also a making of featurette and on set diaries that have some of the same footage in it, but shows the process of making the film as well as the on-set hijinks that went on. A short called Snakes On Jonah shows the fear that star Jonah Hill has for animals as he is wrapped in a 6 foot python snake. There is also a funny piece called Cop Car Confessions where Officer Michaels and Slater drive around with various celebrities in the back including Justin Long and Chris Kattan to name a few. The audio commentary is rich with banter between the film’s primary people including Judd Apatow’s daughter which keeps Jonah from cursing in front of her. He eventually lets loose with a barrage and Apatow is not heard from on the commentary again as he gets up and leaves. The 2 disc unrated DVD is truly a comedic romp loaded with laughs from the feature film through all of the various special features. The “penis montage” can be one of the funniest things set to film since Jason Biggs got caught humping an apple pie in the original
American Pie
. This is a must have for any fan of the film and the perfect gift for the holidays.
