Into the West
I really enjoyed listening to Pilot Speed's Into the West CD. Todd Clark can really pen a song. He can also sing and play guitar. And he can do it all very well. His voice covers a rather large range. At first impression, Pilot Speed sounds like a Coldplay knockoff. however, given a choice between the two, I would rather listen to Pilot Speed. Come to think of it, I would rather listen to a lot of other bands instead of Coldplay.
Into the West is an interesting album. There are several songs I like a lot. The opening track, "Knife-Grey Sea" being one of them. It's very melodic and quite possibly the best cut on the whole CD. Another one of my favorites being. "Don't Stare", the fourth cut from the CD. It has a trance-inducing quality about it, which alternates with a U2ish guitar riffs, and chime attacks. I also enjoyed "Into your Hideout", which expressed a little more energy and range with a driving steady beat.
Not all the songs are "keepers" though. "I won't blame you", emitted more of an Eagles sound, with a twangier guitar, and vocals, a bit whiner, just like Don Henley likes to sing 'em. "Alright", just seemed to lose me. With lyrics repeating, "I'm not alright, I'm not alright!". I have to agree. Final track, "Into the West", just drags on and on way too long for my tastes. It's the sort of song you would expect to hear during the credits of a film that ended with a funeral.
That being said, I still liked more of this CD, than I disliked. It will be played again.
