Drama Queen
Neurosonic’s Drama Queen does absolutely nothing for me. I hate to start out a review with such a blunt statement like that, but it’s true. I have tried to listen to the album multiple times, and I keep arriving to the same conclusion: It ain’t for me. I can’t even trash the album because I don’t hate it. I just don’t care about it enough. As soon as it’s over, I forget that it was even playing.
A big problem for me is that they sound too much like Dope at times, and Dope is a band I have been listening to for a few years. Not saying that they’re copying them or anything like that, it’s just that I can’t help but compare the sound, because that’s the first thing that enters my mind when I hear Neurosonic.
I think what went wrong for me was the very first track, “So Many People.” This is because the singer sounds like he’s rapping or trying to sing very fast. The first song on an album always sets a tone with the listener, almost like the first chapter of a book. If you don’t like the first song, then it’s very unlikely that you’re going to end up loving the rest. Thankfully, not all of the songs sound like that one, but the seed was already planted in my brain. I disliked the first song, and it was hard for me to shake the feeling.
Overall, it wasn’t a horrible album. It’s nothing that makes you want to toss it out of the window and curse God for giving you the ability to hear, if that helps any. It just didn’t do it for me. Music is weird like that. Even if you try to listen to it with an open mind and are willing to be fair, you can’t avoid putting your personal feelings into it. Music has to have some sort of a personal connection with us in order for us to fully appreciate it.
Please, just take this as my opinion. If you’re curious to hear what some of Drama Queen by Neurosonic sounds like, check out their myspace at www.myspace.com/neurosonic There’s a chance you may get something from it that I wasn’t able to.
