At the Edge of the World

Godhead is an alternative rock/metal band from Washington, DC.  They have been putting out albums since 1995 and At the Edge of the World is their 8th (including an Unplugged EP).  They got their name out there by being the only band signed to the short lived Posthuman Records, fronted by Marilyn Manson.  Four members make up Godhead and besides the drummer they have all been involved since the beginning.  Jason C. Miller fronts the group with his soothingly depressing singing.  They could be classified as alternative rock due to his voice but they do, on occasion, get heavy with their music.  Their moody lyrics over slow rock music is pretty much their definitive style and they have perfected it.

Godhead broke the mold of sounding like another Marilyn Manson clone and fine tuned their act a bit.  Dropped the electronic sounding songs from their earlier days and stuck to the hauntingly dark melodies over a standard rock music background.  The themes are still depressing but that’s what Godhead does best.  At the Edge of the World follows in the same footsteps they have been taking since 2003’s Evolver.  Although it seems they went a bit lighter on this album possibly in order to get some mainstream radio play.  I would much rather prefer they go heavier with the music as it fits uniquely with the vocals of Miller.  Songs that stick out in my mind are “Stay Back”, “Closing the Door”, and “The Origin of Suffering”.  If David Bowie or Depeche Mode were getting started today they would put out something similar to At The Edge of the World.  Decent album for those that want a softer styled vocal with their rock n roll.  The band isn’t unique in anyway but with Miller’s vocal stylings on top, it at least makes them an interesting listen.
