ANIMOSITY
You all may as well just bow down on your knees right now! Why? This Atlanta based band is back with one kick ass third effort. And that is the fact, Jack! The shortened tale of this band goes like this. They were on the Mortal Kombat 2 soundtrack with a killer cut that I loved! The first album and then a never-ending tour and then POW! Back in the studio to record the follow up the record Home. A very erratic record for sure, but still cool. Videos and the most recent DVD release of Retrospect, all back up that this bands hype was always well worth it. They kick f-ing ass!
I was treated to a teaser EP CD for a few weeks before this came to me. I was just bowing to those tracks on that CD alone. The balance of soul, heaviness, melody, catchiness and … can be found on every song here. It also helps with the back up vocal duties held by screaming Morgan Rose and the southern Clint Lowery. I must tell you, I sit here floored by the effort these special sounding guys have served this time out. You still have the great pulsating riffs and licks . The songs seems so much more mature than ever before.
"T.O.A.B." starts it off in a more uptempo way, yeehaw! . The pit dwellers will dig right in on "Praise". "Trust" has such deep and heartfelt vocals that blew me away. Lajon is one singer that many of you people need to be informed about. He has so many styles that all work to his advantage and the listeners. The guys contributing in the back give this bands sound landscape a kick in the ass! You all must remember that they do have industrial like effects but definitely aren't overused. This record is surely powerful as hell. Every CD player that I have played it on, it sounded great.
Next up, "Crucified" has wicked riffs and skin hits. Listen to that soul in the leads! Killer! One of the newer songs to me is "Xmas Song". A very mellow track for sure again the guys are showing that they can venture to different areas . Clint did more of the leads on this one. A sweet track that could see radio play. "Dead Set" is another track I heard early. Every listen I had, I stood in awe over the heaviness and just the way they lead into a track. I could just see Morgan jumping out of his drum stool on this track "Dead Set". Another out and out awesome track. I did also like some more of the dabble into the punk side they did here. They can also get real mellow for a second and get Fear Factory heavy like on "Shine". Then again listen to how awesome and catchy this track is. It all seems so uplifting at times.
"Follow" is a track that sees some more manipulation and more heart. Everything is more stripped down and mellow tweakage. It builds and the power kicks in. Definitely more exploring on this track in all aspects of the bands music. "Damaged" returns us right back to a harder side while you post 90's industrialist hear some familiar effects. Another track that drives along and then breaks out and becomes more aggressive and soulful… This band just oozes talent! More heavy you say? "Live Again" has some monster riffs with some bass and beat like grooves. Some wild effects are in the mix for sure.
These guys aren't afraid to show just how melodic they can get. "Beautiful" is more on a mid paced power tip. This track has a good amount of Logan in the angry chair. I seriously love the way they are incorporating the 3 voices more than before. Another more grown up track it was for sure. Don't worry more phatness is to come. "Redefine" offers more of that. "Angel's Son" turns up another time here. I must have heard seven versions of this by now. This one is more classical than the version that came on the Lynn Straight tribute record. And I do enjoy the first version the most. This is more a sweeter version and a plus track. I think MTV woke up to it finally. I could only wish radio would discover this song already.
A super strong record. Don't deny yourself some soulful and pounding tunes. You'll note that the phatness factor is like a switch on in a blip and adventuring the next. This one is making me look at a lot of my collection and saying that I still cant define Sevendust's sound? Funny! Isn't it? I've been is Sevendust overload for about two months now and am still loving what I'm hearing as are others around me. Great band, Great record.
