SCARS

Here is a band that I have a wealth of knowledge about. The band hail from Chicago and is led by ex-Sindrome guitar player Shaun Glass. Sindrome were once a powerhouse demo releasing band that just crushed! Soil came along first with an EP for Olympic Records and then another EP and a full record called, Throttle-Junkies for MIA records. Very many cool rocking moments on all those releases for sure. They also did a bit of time on the last Ozzfest tour.

Now we find ourselves with the band moving on to J records. So, I found myself picking this record up at the local record store. Sometimes we buy them! I was expecting a strong record after all that they offered beforehand. The sound is so refined and every track is very imaginative southern like and catchy. It is very loud rock based in the more creeping Sabbath riff area, but just goes off trying new sounds and textures while staying ultimately powerful.

"Breaking Me Down" will get those that dig more crunch and some tongue twisting vocals and pure force, into it. That track blows you away on sight. "Halo" has neat percussion and a lead in and pounding rock riff that purely slays! Want catchy,? You've got it. "Need To Fell" will have those old Alice In Chains fans rubbing out one on the speakers. They can go sounding like that to ultra heavy like Machine Head to COC, Down, Pantera, Armored Saint, Soundgarden and so much more it isn't funny. Ryan McCoombs does have a very distinctive vocal quality that I did also enjoy, even death metalers could understand it. Ryan has a very understandable deep vocal style that is so cool in a rock arena. He's not to afraid to try some weird stuff for sure.

"Wide Open" has more of the heavy intact for sure. The groove and back up vocals on this track also served its purpose well. Another catchy track follows on "Understanding Me". More deep lyrics and you Alice In Chains fans will just bow to the floor on this one. "My Own" is another huge track that really had me smiling about the variety that is working so well on this record. "Unreal" has more of a calmer groove with a alternative edge and then goes on to unleash pure aggression. Think pissed off Creed! "Inside" could also be another hit for sure if heard by enough ears. Acid tripping and all on this track. More phat groove and rock. "Two Skins" has more of the bellowing vocals and almost bionic sounds on the guitars in the mix. I thought I was hearing things? Nope! It is the weirdness effect on the mix. "The One" starts more mellow like and then goes for a more punk sound with melody.

"New Faith" explores more percussive sounds. I was thinking Tool for a second and then the riffs kicked in and it went Soil. We are eleven songs in and here is another catchy track. "Why" is more up thrash that really reminded me of Armored Saint. "Black 7" has a power surge and midpaced march like sound to it. If you want some solid ROCK? Then I don't think you'll be let down by this record. This one was permanently stuck in the CD player for weeks now. A band that many should really investigate now!
