ROCK IN RIO
The long awaited Rock In Rio release is here. Actually it’s been a few weeks since this came out I just couldn't find the extra time to write about it. It gave me a chance to crank it more. What really makes me laugh is the fact when Bruce Dickinson was gone he also released a live album called Scream For Me Brazil (solo project) and the year was 1999. That is just extra footnote if you didn't know or even if you care.
In the bands years together plenty has been documented live. They always give the fans extras. It all started with Maiden Japan, one of the greatest of all time live albums ever recorded called Live After Death, Live At Donington, A Real Live One, and the killer live album with all the older stuff called A Real Dead One was offered. All this live stuff and Maiden fans want more! What we get here is an awesome history of the band all jumbled up and it was recorded on the tour for the last record Brave New World. This also documents the triple axe attack live.
One of the other things that was a bit funny was the fact that I saw this tour at Madison Square Garden when it rolled through. It’s another one of those footnotes that isn't vital information for you. The two CD set includes a video for "Brave New World" and a day in the life. That one just follows the band around documenting what the day in the life of an elder metalhead band is like.
You get 19 songs in all on this killer live record. They come out playing three from the new record "The Wicker Man", "Ghost of the Navigator" and the title track "Brave New World" (of course there is an intro to the album). They start backtracking to "Wrathchild" and "2 Minutes To Midnight". They then start to blend stuff from the newer records. You always wondered how the former singer Blaze would sound doing Bruce Bruce. Now the tables are turned. "Sign Of the Cross" and "The Clansman" are done great by Bruce. It is amazing that they shied away from the Blaze records the most on this CD. In reality they do play a good part of the Brave record and hit the old classics during the second half of the second CD. "Run To The Hills", "Hallowed Be Thy Name", and "Number Of The Beast" are all here.
I really feel that this is the best sounding Maiden live effort out today. Many may still argue that Live After Death was the best, but that was for the time. The past is great but what counts is here and today. People thrive on hearing newer stuff and Maiden blend it like a fine Angel food cake mix and they surely didn't forget the icing and candles!
