Ok, don't get too comfortable boys and girls because the CD warns this
only a "promotional copy" of the upcoming "Orange Album" from this New Jersey
band. Why does my CD sound like its being played off a dirty record needle? I
think after this last batch of reviews Steve has me doing I am going to
spending a lot of time with needles.
I can actually empathize with these dudes because of their self-pitying
letter they sent along with the disc. I remember being younger and sending my
demos out to labels along with letters that read "I know you must get a lot
of garbage in the mail…." Or "enclosed is some info on the band, in case you
care" or "I know we might suck but…". Honestly, I'd rather hear shit like
that from bands rather than the ones who assume we give a fuck and walk
through the door like they are the best thing since diner cole slaw.
Ok, now onto the music…. It's a confused potpourri of metal, ska and
punk. I've got double bass and Bad Religion harmonies one minute and then
I've got the horn section from the Pietasters the next.
A lot of the songs start off very serene, with light clean channel
guitars and introspective hemming and hawing which gives away to quirky punk
with horns. The high school marching band horns don't really work when you've
got Robert Smith pondering life on vocals though.
Anyway, these dudes look real young and seem to be having fun and that's
all that really matters. I'll take a bunch of teenagers sucking dick in a
garage over a wanna-be professional band with its eyes set on glossy stardom
any day.
