PERSEVERANCE

Nu Metal bands have been put on notice hardcore is far from dead. HATEBREED’s sophomore effort, Perseverance, is a ballistic attack of unbridled rage and aggression. “Now is the time for me to rise to my feet”, the opening line screamed by front man Jamey Jasta on the first single “I Will Be Heard” is as much as a wake up call to all of music as it is a opening salvo for this New Haven. CT band. Following up the stellar album “Satisfaction Is The Death Of Desire” and a successful run on the second stage of Ozzfest 2001, Hatebreed seems to have catapulted them to the forefront of the hard core/ metal reemergence. The album is a head banger’s dream as it offers up seventeen tracks of relentless, heart racing tracks. You will not find any overdubbed, rap heavy songs here folks. Hatebreed offers only riff heavy driven tracks along the lines of classic Slayer and Venom records of the mid 80’s. Lou Richards and Sean Martin provide a seamless dual guitar attack as they race each other through “Proven” all the way to the finale of “Condemned At Birth”. They really shine on “We Will Fight”, a true example of thrash at it’s finest. While nothing spectacular, Matt Byrne ravages through his skins on each and every second he plays and Chris Beattie matches him note for note on bass. Jasta’s lyrics are just as hard driven as the music it’s self. The anti suicide howls on “You’re Not Alone” are direct and to the point and justly so. Clocking in at just over three minutes, he achieves his goals of getting straight to the fucking matter at hand. As a reward for such a stellar effort, Hatebreed will be at Ozzfest again this year as co- headliners of the second stage. If you are tired of the same old recycled shit shoved at you by mainstream music, Perseverance is just what you need.
