SONGS FOR THE DEAF
If you ever want to give yourself a really bad migraine, go to
Queensofthestoneage.com, and check out the "Family Tree" section on the site. Your head will be spinning when you see how many bands the members of QOTSA have occupied slots in at one point or another.
I first heard about these guys from a friend who was shooting a video for the band KYUSS, and who subsequently was prevented from releasing the video by the band when a few members branched off and became QOTSA. I'm not really sure why they didn't want the video released, but if it had anything to do with preserving the creative process behind this band, I'll understand.
Songs For The Deaf is some of the most original music I've heard in ages; It's the kind of stuff that makes you want to show up at a show (preferably one of theirs), and make the devil horns with your fingers. It's heavy, pounding, brutal...and it's seriously catchy. It's no wonder Dave Grohl got back behind the drum kit to join this band in the studio, before going back to his own group FOO FIGHTERS...These guys are THAT good.
You hear it primarily in the first two tracks "You Think I Ain't Worth A Dollar, But I Feel Like A Millionaire" (which incidentally is also on the
XXX SOUNDTRACK and
their first single "No one Knows"...both show tremendous maturity in songwriting, while showing us how well Josh Homme can scream.
Throughout the entirety of the disc, the band pokes fun at mainstream radio, or as they call it "KLN", or "Clone Radio"...presumably mocking the fleets of identical-sounding pop stations across the country who weren't playing these guys' songs when they were in KYUSS or earlier incarnations of QOTSA.
Bottom line: No, there's no fucking bottom line, just go buy it.
