NEW EARTH MUD
Finally. I get to hear Chris Robinson do what he does best. Sing his ass off
and write some seriously soul moving songs in the process.
Right of the bat, the terrific 'Safe In The Arms Of Love' is a terrific
mid-tempo rocker with a fantastic chorus. Robinson simply lays back
on this album and lets his voice carry his skinny ass all the way to glory.
I knew the guy could pen a tune, after having made some real
monsters with his 'other' band, The Black Crowes, he gets to bare his soul
to you and demonstrate that he doesn't need anyone to make
a classic disc. The disc immediately follows with the mellow, acoustic
driven 'Silver Car', with it's whisky soaked vocal delivery and deep
layers (the slide guitar part has a very similar sound to Pink Floyd's
"Breathe") defines the feel for the entire record. This is not rock folks,
this is just good singer/songwriter type stuff, with great songs, terrific
arrangements and an honest delivery of something pure.
Another fabulous track, 'Kid's That Ain't Got None' (wordy titles huh
Chris?) simply wraps it's sonic fingers and does not let go. Terrific
hook and chorus and Chris' voice is simply stunning. The rest of the disc is
terrifc as well, with key tracks such as 'Sunday Sound', and
"Katie Dear' (HOW did he land Kate Hudson..HOW??) really digging deep into
the singers emotional core, to reveal a tender and often
vulnarable person. My only gripe is that a few of the tracks are bit too
slow and not very memorable, but compared to the other tracks,
it's simply not a big deal. If you want a terrific chill out, light the pipe
(you do smoke ONLY tobacco in those right...Hahaha) and enjoy
the Sunday rain, this disc simply can't be beat. Timeless.
