THE DATSUNS
In trying to describe this band, I've been running through every similarity I can possibly muster to try and accurately pinpoint their sound, so bear with me...
It's kind of like BLACK SABBATH-meets-THE WHITE STRIPES...
Or maybe a really cool LENNY KRAVITZ riff-meets-very early KISS...
Maybe it's like AC/DC-meets-THE STOOGES (even though theres already a shitload of bands doing that)...
THE DATSUSNS play stripped-down, crunchy, hooky, riff-rock from the bowels of New Zeland. This is a disc that would sound exactly the same in 1973, 1983, 1993, or 2003. It's that same dirty, gritty, face-smashed-into-concrete RAWK that's been around since the late 60's...only angrier. "Angrier" in the sense that track 2 is called "MF from Hell" (and yes, they do say "motherfucker").
Not only do these guys sound like a 1970s-era garage band, they LOOK like it too. They've definitely got the big-greasy-coif and big-collared shirt thing down...with bellbottoms to match.
The only thing I'm not crazy about is their choice of singles; "In Love", the first single, was an awesome choice. It sounds like THIN LIZZY...if Phil Lynott was on fire....well maybe just his 'fro. The second single though, "Harmonic Generator"...I dunno...It's not tearing my ass out (nice visual, eh?). I think "Sittin' Pretty" would have been a much better choice. Hey, it still COULD be. Wink, wink, nudge nudge, Mr. V2 A&R guy...
BUY TWO COPIES; One to listen to, and one to smash things with.
