Ughh, another 'tribute' disc to mull over and believe me, there isn't much
to rave about here. First off, I will say this - Opening track 'Shine On You
Crazy Diamond'
performed by Steve Lukather (Toto/Los Lobotomies guitarist/singer) is
stellar, with it's hyped out sound and frantic energy, Luke simply burns
this one up. I didn't
expect less from the man, and he never fails to impress me. The other note
worthy track is performed by blues/jazz guitarist Robben Ford, who tackles
'Any Color
You Like' and gives it a raw, blues/jazz spin that deviates from the
meloncholy Floyd version. These two tracks save this disc from the beer
coaster pile because
the rest of the perfomances are pedestrian and downright bad. The songs are
nothing more than glorified bar band versions handled by 80's former icons
such as
Tommy Shaw, Glenn Hughes, Jeff Scott Soto and some others not even worth
mentioning. Personally, I think these sort of albums should be done away
with entirely,
because they really do nothing to pay tribute to the respected artist, nor
do they demonstrate anything new or interesting for the material. Stick with
the original and
you can't go wrong.
