(You know, Marc and I normally don't agree when it comes to music criticism, but this time, I have to admit, he hit the nail on the F-ing head. I swear, if it wasn't for the constant bickering between George Lynch and Don Dokken, this entire album would have made for a brand new DOKKEN disc. - SteveC)
I KNEW IT!!!! I've been waiting for this disc to be released for months now and this is what I get. ANOTHER WATERED DOWN
VERSION OF...DOKKEN (a band both of these guys used to be a part of)! These guys simply CAN NOT get away from this writing style no matter what incarnation of a band they
put together.
The songs sound like old Dokken tracks and Jeff Pilson's style of singing is very similar to Don Dokken's (I shouldn't have expected much to change, considering how long these guys were both playing in the same band).
What I wanted to hear was a little originality. NOPE. It sounds like Lynch and Pilson had a lot of material that never made it onto past Dokken records, and decided to release it in hopes of finding a new audience, or at least maintain whatever audience either one of them has left.
This songs on this disc are just disappointing. I can't trash these guys as musicians because they are masters
at what they do, nor can I get mad at them for trying, but this is simply nothing but re-hashed George Lynch/Dokken material with udpated production values (I will say that this disc is mixed VERY well, and the thing SLAMS sonically), but that doesn't make up for the fact that the songs are mediocre. It's really too bad, because this was my one last real hope of hearing George Lynch do something new.
(OK, on second thought, maybe I don't agree with him 100%. Maybe more like 80%...I think Lynch is an amazing guitar player, but every friggin' riff he comes up with sounds like it should be on a Dokken record. The guy has this signature style or riff-writing that he can't seem to get away from)
