HULK OFFICIAL SOUNDTRACK

When I first head that Danny Elfman was going to be responsible for The Hulk (Score), I was more than a little skeptical. I mean, the guy has had a really great track record with scorning films for Tim Burton and Sam Raimi (and most of those soundtracks were so similar, you could tell immediately Elfman was behind them. Those dark, brooding melodies, the sharp horn hits...would those all be present and accounted for?

Pleasantly, no. This is about as diverse as I've heard Elfman get (well, I mean score-wise...let's not completely disregard OINGO BOINGO, shall we?). I know films, and I know film scores, but I was never schooled approprately in composition, so trying to write a review from a technical standpoint is going to be useless. I will say that I have seen the film. Yes, the complete version, and I have heard the score...and the music is very fitting for a character of such green magnitude as THE HULK.

The one non-Elfman track on this disc (and we've discussed this many times before on this site) is "Set Me Free", performed by VELVET REVOLVER, otherwise known as former GUNS N' ROSES members Slash, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum, Scott Weiland from STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, and guitairst Dave Kushner. The deal to have this song added to the soundtrack came but a month before the disc's June 17th release date, because Universal realized that soundtracks have become BIG BUSINESS in recent years, and there weren't any bona fide "hits" on this disc. "Set Me Free" doesn't even appear in the film until about 20 seconds into the ending credits, but the song is credited right in the beginning of the end credits, right as they begin to roll. Aside from that, the song rocks. It really sounds like it could go either way. It's half a Guns N Roses song meets half a Stone Temple Pilots song. It rocks, and makes you (ok, well not YOU necessarily, but ME) want to hit people...hard...and probably drive faster than you should.

Can ONE hot rock song sell a ton of records? I doubt it, but it will sell more than it would have with only the Elfman tracks.
