WAR AT THE WARFIELD
You have to give credit to the guys in SLAYER, because for the past 20 years they have never faltered, strayed or compromised
their sound, image, or vision one bit. No power ballads, no un-plugged records, no 'experimental' phases, just pure, unhinged
metal played to perfection.
After witnessing these guys in concert in the early and mid nineties and having the pleasure of seeing them on their last tour, this DVD is the best souvenir any die-hard Slayer fan could ask for. From the opening 'Disciple' to the closing 'Angel of Death' (that song still contains the best metal scream ever committed to tape), this DVD captures Slayer in their best environment - on stage. Tom Araya is formidable and menacing and delivers his sermon of death, pain, torture, suffering and nihilism with such furvor, you have to wonder how he can keep such intensity for over two hours.
Guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman simply buzz saw through the songs with such precision that any metal band worth their name should sit in awe of these two. King is simply enormous and commands the stage with his presence, while Hanneman is a bit more reserved, keeping
his focus on delivering flesh ripping riff after riff. The true wonder of all this has to be drummer Paul Bostaph (this was Bostaph's last show with SLAYER before joining SYSTEMATIC full-time), because some of Slayer's tempos are in the "ridiculously fast" category, yet he maintains every beat, fill and accent with machine gun precision. The DVD is shot wonderfully and has many angles, and captures this band on a truely inspired night. Also included is footage throughout the DVD of
fan commentary, some of which are downright hilarious as well as the MTV-banned "Bloodline" video is included as well along with a
50 minute fan documentary. This DVD is by far one of the more intense and perfect representations of what it's like to be at a Slayer
show, save for the bloody lip you may sustain in the mosh pit. This is as good as it gets....end of story.
