GO
I'll fully admit that like many people, I didn't know anything about VERTICAL HORIZON until this Georgetown band released their major label debut
Everything You Want in 1999 (because that's when RCA spent a few bucks promoting them and radio stations started playing their singles...which is usually how the whole music business/fame thing works). After hearing an advance copy of their second disc for RCA,
Go, I wish I'd picked up on this impressive bunch of songwriters sooner. This CD could be just as much of a hit for them, if not more, than
Everything You Want was.
Now, with that being said, if you're not into melodic, hooky, Top 40, GOO GOO DOLLS-y, BON JOVI-ish crunch rock, Vertical Horizon is NOT the band for you. If you're a fan of solid, melodic songs loaded with hooks, then you REALLY need to check out
Go.
Everything You Want yeilded four singles, and
Go has at least that many if not more. The first single "I'm Still Here" has already gone out to radio, and if this disc gets even a little promotional cash behind it, it's going to sell huge.
Admittedly, this is safe, hummable, happy-person music that chicks are going to gobble up like chocolate bars during thier periods (if that's not putting too fine a point on it), and Top 40 stations are going to play the shit out of it, just like they did with the band's debut. The main difference between Vertical Horizon and a lot of the Top 40 rock acts surfacing in the past few years is consistency. Track after track, these guys deliver quality material.
OK, I've gushed enough. I need to go find something to complain about.
