ROORBACK
The SEPS are back for another attack for those heavy lovers out there
today. From a standpoint of where they came from, they don't sound
anything like they did then, not at all. There are many ways to look at
this record.
It starts with a fake out beginning and then shoots off "Come Back
Alive" sounding more like SLAYER meets CHAOS AD. "Godless" shows them
jamming a bit more, but again the music sounds Chaos AD like. This one
is way less thrashing. This will fit with those that love the more
Machine Head like sounds. "Ape's Of God" has a great beat like
"Territory" did way back. I did enjoy this track a lot. "More Of The
Same" takes the slower side and shows Derrick Green's more vocal side.
That is the main thing about this record for the most part. Derrick has
had a big evolution in his style. Those Nu-metal fans just might want
to check this.
"Urge" goes more for a tiny bit of the Roots sound and the guitars are
churning. They took a nice adventurous turn on this nearly spoken
track. Get ready for the blast kids! "As It Is" crawls and is a bit
more accessible. "Mind War" was the first song floating around that I
liked and that is here. I'd assume they are pushing that track? "Leech"
was the best track here. The more punking Sepultura and the old Beneath
The Remains riff patterns came to mind. "The Rift" also offers up other
older fashioned bashing that will have Nu metalers going I think I like
this?
"Bottomed Out" is a semi acoustic track with effects and the
whole nine. They might have stretched the experimenting further here.
Derrick’s real voice is heard. WOW this is pretty laid back. It does
pick up and get heavy but it is pretty fucking strange. "Activist" is
another that is very aggressive. We get an outro (listen to the very
hidden ending) and a cover of U2's "Bullet The Blue Sky" with a video
of that same song.
I can say they took a look back and updated some old sounds and took it
to another level that ends up being able to crush the commercial Nu
metal market. The guitar tweaking of Andreas is god like always. They
seemed to jam a bit more than just being so robotic. I still think a
few tracks were weaker than the others. Some older fans might have a
hard time with those songs. On the other hand there is plenty to bash
to here. Look for the digipack 2 CD and it will have a covers EP. It
has Sep covering Devo, Jane's Addiction, Public Enemy, Exodus and
Hellhammer to name a few. See that weird combo? It is definitely a
respectable effort but not their greatest
