Under the Skin - Making of Thickskin
If there's one thing SKID ROW has always done, regardless of lineup, is that they make what they do look like it's a lot of fun. Being in a dirtbag rock band, touring the country, looking at bosoms, and shitting into plastic bags on your tour bus isn't worth doing unless it's a lot of fun, and Skid Row looks like they're having a blast doing all of the above.
Under the Skin - Making of Thickskin chronicles the band's rebirth with Johnny Solinger and Phil Varone, and the recording of their new disc,
ThickSkin. The main difference between this video and the other videos these guys made when they were touring behind
Skid Row and
Slave To The Grind is that now they have money. It's feasable for the entire band (minus Scotti Hill) to all live in Snake's big ass house in Jersey for months and get to know one another...without the fear of eviction because everyone's got a few million in the bank.
Basically this is a video that shows a bunch of guys in their mid-to-late thirties, all fucking around, drinking heavily, farting a lot, watching a ton of television, telling shit jokes, drinking a little more, falling down, and occasionally working on a record. What you DO NOT see any of is the (briefly mentioned) hostility that existed with the former version of the band. All you see is the formation of a fraternity, a gang if you will. Sure a few of the gang members are married and like I mentioned earlier, a few of these guys have money now (publishing royalties are indeed a good thing), so the whole formation of this new version of Skid Row was a much easier process than their previous experience.
I'm normally a pretty cynical fuck about being in the music business, but this video will encourage you to join a band and follow your dreams. Skid Row aren't spoiled brats. They work hard, they drink harder, they don't give a shit about staying at Motel 6, because as long as the payoff is getting to play in front of a live audience, then they're happy. THAT is what being in a rock and roll band should be about.
If you're even remotely discouraged about being in a band, buy this DVD. Now.
