Concerto Suite For Electric Guitar And Orchestra in E Flat Minor
After suffering through Yngwie's recent studio disc Attack, this disc is exactly what I had hoped it to be; It's intense, beautiful,
melodic and utterly inspiring. If your even remotely familiar with Yngwie's guitar style or discography, you are well aware of
his heavily influenced classical/baroque era sound and his constant attempts at marrying heavy metal with traditional classical music. A few years ago, Malmsteen released the 'studio' version of this album and demonstrated his amazing ability to create a REAL and AUTHENTIC symphonic piece, not some rehashed Orchestration of existing material (though the live Orchestra only reading of 'Black Star' is downright cool) that many other bands attempt when trying the Orchestral thing (ummm METALLICA). Yngwie is a virtuoso if every sense of the word, and no matter how many people slag him, he is virtually untouchable in this genre (many have tried, but don't come close to his passion, grace and fury on the instrument). What makes this disc such a winner is that you get to hear Yngwie performing not only his amazing Concerto Suite in E flat Minor, but also carries some of his best instrumental works into the program allowing you to hear (and see - there is a killer DVD of
this concert as well) Yngwie live, in your face and without the option of overdubs. Though a bit repetitive at times in his choice of licks, and some of the material at times tends to sound similar, Yngwie is simply on fire and bursting with energy during this performance. It is truly wonderful to see a great master of guitar at work, and without a doubt one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived doing what he does best - PLAY. Now if we can only get him to stop writing lyrics, things would be a lot more enjoyable.
