LIVE IN DENVER

I have to seriously wonder why I bought this DVD/CD. Oh, I remember now - to laugh hysterically at how FAT YNGWIE MALMSTEEN has become and for actually using the phrase "Do you know what time it is? It's time to ROCCCKKK!!!!", ummm Yngwie, that phrase is SO out of date that I have to seriously question if you've ventured out of your home in the past twenty years.

Having witnessed this tour in all it's versions, with the first G3 event starting in 1996, I have sat through countless JOE SATRIANI and STEVE VAI concerts since 1992. Now that Yngwie was added to the lineup, this year's tour was SUPPOSED to be very exciting. Instead, it couldn't have been more BORING.

Satriani once again decided to include the umpteenth version of 'Satch Boogie' on every release he puts out, and performs his set with such calculated and unimaginative perfection, that you wonder if he's even playing live at all, because he simply never makes a mistake (I applaud that on one hand, but then at times would like to see a bit more 'human' reaction from the guy).

Steve Vai is flamboyant as ever, with his opening 3 neck guitar track and really comical facial contortions during his 'emotional' opening performance, and the bombastic energy of 'Juice', I seriously wonder how seriously this guy takes himself. Vai does provide the most energetic and musically charged performance of the three acts.

The fact that this tour even worked with all the massive egos on one stage is miracle in itself, but seriously guys, it's time to come up with a new concept or put the G3 legacy to bed. They save the best for last as our lovely Swedish sausage Yngwie hits the stage with smoke and leather pants and actually spins his guitar around his body and kicks his spiked boots in the air (YES! I'ts 1985!!!). His performance is lackluster, full of mindless self indulgent noodling and really bad vocals, provided by Mr. Malmsteen, who should really stick to playing his guitar and NEVER be allowed in front of microphone again!!!!!! Things only get more comical during the 'jam' portion of the show where all three guitarists hit the stage to 'trade' licks. Before Satriani is finished announcing Yngwie, he has ripped a torrant of notes and continues to play over everyone else's solo spots and dominates the entire stage during the proceedings. The god-awful versions of 'Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)' and 'Keep On Rockin' In The Free World' are even further proof that they should heed the words of Vai's former boss, FRANK ZAPPA: SHUT UP AND PLAY YOUR GUITAR!!!!!!!

This is not worth purchasing unless your a true diehard of ALL three guitarists (I am, but seriously feel jipped by buying both the DVD and CD because the clever marketing folks decided to use different shows and different tracks for each release)
