LIVE AT NASSAU COLISEUM

(FoundryMusicDanny invited me to this show, the same show where Op and Ant were hanging backstage with Metallica and Godsmack, and I had to pass up the ticket. In retrospect, I should have gone. May God feed me to a hungry walrus for being so foolish. - SC)

What is there really to say. METALLICA. Nassau Coliseum. Oh I'm sorry, did you miss it? (STEVE!) Well if you went the way of our HNIC and missed the show...Don't worry, I'd be glad to fill you all in.

For the first show on the 20th I had a general admission ticket. I used to think general admission was the best ticket to hold simply because you weren't bound to a specific location. As long as you showed up early enough you were virtually guaranteed a great spot, right? Ummm..no. As I walked out on the floor, I immediately noticed the stage was not off to one side as I had thought from looking at the seating chart. It took up the majority of the floor. I see every last person off to one side of the stage, so I'm thinking, "Thats the place to be." So I head over there.

Now I'm trying to set up the perfect location to stand in so when the crowd rushes the stage I can break through the weakest link to get to the railing. Perfect. Two snotty Long Island girls. Now I had my plan, problem was, I was early as hell it was probably about 5:45 and the show wasn't supposed to start until 7.

Ok. Maybe someone can explain this to me. You're at a concert. You have different seats than your friend. Why is it that you have to call your friend on your cell phone and then wave your arm around and say "CAN YOU SEE ME??" I must've seen at least 25 people pull this ultimate tool move. If you think thats retarded....just wait.

Godsmack hits the stage about 7. I didn't know what to expect not knowing what kind of show they put on. Now not only was the stage HUGE but the whole damn thing spun around slowly, so the "awesome" spot I though I had turned out to be no better than the spot the drunk got who showed up last minute. Of course they played all the singles, but I think the highlight of the set was when Sully hopped on the second drum kit, (which we had all thought was set up for Lars) and starts playing the congas along to this very rhythmic, hypnotic jam. I had no idea Sully was so talented. I don't care for his voice too much, and live it sounded even worse, but showing off his actual musical abilities totally made up for that. When the conga jam was over I had expected him to get down and start singing again. Nope! He grabs a pair of sticks and starts a "dueling drummers" session. Sticks flying everywhere, very well choreographed. It really blew me away. This is one of the few times a bands live performance has swayed me into a fan. After about fifty minutes of kicking ass, the lights go up and we recoup our energy for the explosion about to hit the stage.

Well..not ABOUT to hit the stage. Metallica's crew took about 45 minutes to set up all their gear and get the lighting guys in their crows nests. Just at the point where everyone's wondering what the fuck is taking so long...

The house goes dark. "The Ecstasy Of Gold" starts up and the whole place fucking explodes. I don't think I'd ever heard a louder crowd anywhere to this point. A faint buzz can be heard fading in as "Ecstasy" is fading out. Louder now. I know exactly what it is. BLACKENED!!!!!

The rest of the set is as follows: (Thanx to MetOnTour.com)
Fuel
The Four Horsemen
Fade To Black
Frantic
Holier Than Thou
No Leaf Clover
St. Anger
Sad But True
Creeping Death
Battery
-----------
I Disappear
Nothing Else Matters
Master Of Puppets
One
Enter Sandman
------------
Jump In The Fire
Metal Militia

Let me just say..The pyro before "One" was UNFUCKING REAL. You felt like you in a fucking war. Every part of the stage was rigged.

Closing the show with Jump and Metal Militia was simply awesome. After doing some research it seems that Metallica hadn't played Metal Militia live since 1985. It was really something special.

Something else that was pretty "special" was the idiot Greek kid next to me, all the time shoving and leaking his way between myself and the dude next to me. This ass and a half whips out his cell phone and starts to RECORD THE FUCKING SHOW with his phone cam. This fucking dicklicker has his phone shoved in front of my face as I'm trying to watch the show. I wait for the song to end and turn to the guy next to me and say "Is this kid the biggest fag on the planet or what?" He heard me, he was just too pussy to say anything. I hope he's an O&A fan and reads this, cuz I want him to know what a disrespectful ass he was. Him and the drunk, sweaty man who smelled like boiled bologna. But thats a whole 'nuther story.

Second show, the 21st. I'm not gonna bother to say anything new about Godsmack, cuz, well, it was the same friggin show. I was now in section 218 (FUCK YOU KROCK PRESALE) but I didn't mind really. It's a whole different show being in general admission and then the next day being in a seat. You don't have to deal with other peoples sweat and parts getting all up ons. Plus you actually have some room to go nuts. Which I did. A bunch of times. Metallica mixed up the set this time around, putting on a far better show this night. The show still opened with Blackened but the rest of the set was:

Fuel
Ride The Lightning
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Frantic
Leper Messiah
I Disappear
St. Anger
Sad But True
Creeping Death
Battery
-----------
No Leaf Clover
Nothing Else Matters
Master Of Puppets
One
Enter Sandman
------------
The Wait
Dyers Eve

Leper Messiah?!?!? DYERS FUCKING EVE!??!?!?! I don't think ANYBODY ever expected to see Metallca play either of these songs live EVER. In addition to Jump and Metal Militia the previous night, anybody who went to both shows really got one hell of a treat.

For all those who missed 'em, don't worry, Lars announced at the end of the second night that they'd be back in town in October. Who knows, maybe they'll pull out Ktulu...
