IN FOR THE KILL
After reading the responses his
interview questions, I have a substantial new-found respect for KEVIN DuBROW, who
until very recently, was the frontman for 80's rock outfit QUIET RIOT. First of all, the guy gave some great answers to those dopey questions. Second, I know now that the guy isn't trying to re-capture the fame he experienced 20 years ago with
In For The Kill; he's just trying to have fun doing what he knows how to do...and make a few bucks doing it.
From the cover art, which is a split image of Kevin's face and the Quiet Riot metal health mask, it's obvious that Kevin isn't trying to hide who he is/has been for 20 years. He's the same guy, just doing a disc of cover tunes. The black and red color scheme is bad ass though, but that's just my personal preference.
In for The Kill is filled with classic rock tracks from 70's bands like T. REX, QUEEN, DEEP PURPLE, MONTROSE, THE SWEET, HUMBLE PIE, MOTT THE HOOPLE and NAZARETH...obviously stuff he grew up listening to. I'm not as familiar with these bands (I'm not a dumbass, I know who all of them are; just not intimately familiar with their catalogs), so I'm not married to the original material.
Kevin's voice is in excellent condition, and Michael Lardie's production is really punchy. I don't know how much of this disc was recorded live, but it sounds like a lot of it was. "Gonna Have A Good Time" sound like a few backing vocal mistakes were left in...which is cool if you're going for the live feel. Actually, if it was done live, that's saying a lot for Kevin Curry, Jeff Martin, and Lardie, who played keys on a lot of tracks. It certainly adds incentive to want to check out Kevin live.
In for the Kill is a great tribute to classic rock acts... and a good reason to get all drunkered up to see a show if Kevin shows up in your town.
